The North Shore of Minnesota boasts some of the darkest skies in the world. When the skies are clear, the stars shine especially bright due to the lack of light pollution, making the Milky Way an excellent subject to photograph during a new moon.
3-day workshop
Day 1 Friday, August 30, 8 - 10 pm
The workshop begins with a slideshow and discussion about night photography, camera control, and techniques at Larsmont Cottages Lake Room. Bring your camera gear for this technical session. We will then head to the shoreline to practice these techniques.
Day 2 Saturday, August 31, 7 - 12 pm
Field session at our off-site shooting location. Capture a Lake Superior sunset and prepare for night shots. The galactic core will be visible around 9:30 pm, giving ample time for camera settings and composition.
Day 3 Sunday, September 1, 9 - 11 am
Editing session at Larsmont Cottages. Share and edit images captured the night before. From 10-11 am, the class will open to others at the Cottages for a presentation on photographing the night sky, including the Northern Lights.
Experience Level: All levels are welcome. This workshop is designed for participants using a digital camera.

- Laptop with editing software (instructors will use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop)

Hayes Scriven, a North Shore Photographer, has captured Lake Superior's beauty since 2019. As a self-taught photographer, Hayes specializes in landscapes and astrophotography. His mastery of capturing the celestial dance above the North Shore has earned him recognition, with his aweinspiring images of the Milky Way and Northern Lights published in various regional magazines, newspapers, and websites.
Nicholas Narog has eight years of experience in photography, specializing in the rugged beauty of the North Shore of Minnesota. His passion for night sky photography has taken him to Alaska, the Southwest, and the Caribbean. Nicholas' work has received numerous awards and features in various magazines, showcasing his dedication to capturing the memorizing wonders of the natural world.
